Opinion essay is one of the most popular types of essay, it is found almost everywhere: on international exams, on olympiads, and on the exam. Talking about its features in this article, I assume that you know the basic principles of writing an essay and know how to make a plan .
The same diversity is characteristic of the formulation of the tasks themselves: a simple phrase, text, several texts, a poem, an image, a video, or something else, depending on the presence or absence of fantasy and freedom of choice from the originator.
What should be in the essay
In any opinion essay there should be an introduction, main part and conclusion.
The introduction sets the topic and expresses the opinion of the author. An important exception: if you write opinion essay for the exam, the opinion should be expressed in the first paragraph of the main part, and not in the introduction.
The main part contains, as a rule, two blocks:
1. argumentation of the author’s opinion;
2. opposite opinion to the author.
Thus, in the first block of the main part we explain in detail to the reader why we have such an opinion, we reinforce our thought with arguments and examples. In the second block, we highlight the position opposite to ours, and also say why we do not consider this position to be correct.
Some assignments clearly indicate the need to cover an alternative position, some do not. When unambiguous indications are absent, one should proceed from the volume of the essay. If the volume is limited to 150 words, it is better to omit the second block. With a limit of 300 words, it would be better to turn it on.
The introduction, the main part and the conclusion are always allocated in separate paragraphs. Thus, any opinion essay contains at least three paragraphs. As for the partitioning of the main part, a block with the opposite opinion is necessarily separated. The rest can be divided or not divided, guided by the principles of logic and requirements in the task.
Essay-reasoning is written in a neutral-formal style . This means that the work should not be abbreviations and colloquial expressions. Complex lexical and grammatical structures are preferable to simple ones.
A very common mistake when writing an essay-reasoning is the substitution of a topic or a shift in emphasis . For example, you need to write on “Penguins make ideal pets”, and the essay says too much about the penguins themselves. At the same time, the problems of penguin maintenance at home are almost not affected, and instead of the required topic, another one is obtained, for example, “Penguins are the most lovable creatures in the world”. It seems to be about penguins, but still not about that. Because of errors of this kind, points are lost for the content.
